Summary: Favorable Reviews

Some campers who used this tent said: Instructions are easy to follow, and the poles and clips are color-coded. The materials used are top quality, it has sturdy poles, and the vestibules are fantastic. It is nice that they provided a bathtub floor also. The seams were all factory taped, and the rain-fly has a durable material that doesn't rip when small branches from dead trees fall on it, as proven in the outing. All in all, quality and budget-wise, this tent belongs at the top.

Summary: Unfavorable Reviews

Some campers who bought the tent said: Setting it up was not a problem, but taking down is a little tricky. Not great in strong winds. Using it with no stakes is not advised. The poles bent a tiny bit, they seem to be too small in diameter.

SPECS AND CONFIGURATIONS

The Conifer+ 5 is Mountainsmith's largest tent, and it has two doors and a maximum center height of 6' 2, which is 11 inches smaller than the average height of the 26 different 5 person tents we have studied. With 84 square feet of space inside, it is a little bit smaller than some other 5-person tents, and it could be a little tight for you and, up to four other campers all through the 3-seasons, this tent is approved for use in, smaller tents like this one often make an excellent choice for people that like spending plenty of time outside their tent getting some air.

A few of the cool points about dome tents are, that they are for, the most part lightweight, making them simple to carry. In most all instances, tents used for backpacking are of the dome type. They are usually, freestanding and very simple to set up. In good weather, you can do without guy lines and stakes, not that this is suggested.

Dome tents are easily the most common of all the other sorts of tents you will find when camping. They tend to fair better in the rain than other types, allowing water to easily slide off the sloped sides, unlike cabin tents that have flat tops, resulting in the rain pooling on the top of the tent. The most basic dome tent should have a rectangular floor, slanted walls a couple of poles which converge in the center of the roof. Because of the way they are made, it is generally considered that they are best suited for up to a maximum of 6 campers.

Down below, you can find an account of the tent's pros and cons.

PROS

  1. Freestanding. The Conifer+ can support its own weight on any terrain. It does not need to be staked down in most cases. But in case of strong winds, it is always best to secure it to the floor with the included steel stakes and guylines.
  2. Vestibules. Having two vestibules. Offers you a place to store shoes and other things that can get dirty, muddy, this is a big plus.
  3. Internal storage. It is nice to see Mountainsmith has added a gear loft and pockets in the interior to store some of your things.
  4. More than one door. With 2 doors, it is easier to get in and out of the tent, in the middle of the night if needed.
  5. Durable, water-resistant floor. The floor material is 68D x 190t Poly PU F/R, which is a substantially thick and high-strength fabric. Meaning the base is not prone to tears and punctures. Also, the material has a 5000 mm waterproofing rating, which is pretty good for most circumstances.
  6. Excellent Ratings The Conifer+ 5 has some of the best ratings of all the tents on optimumtents.com

CONS

  1. Vulnerable to wind. Because of its size and shape, the Conifer+ may not do well in strong winds if it is not firmly secured with the provided guy lines and stakes. Even though the tent is listed as freestanding in all but very calm conditions, one would need to stake and tie it down correctly.
  2. Not roomy. With a floor area of 84 square feet, the Conifer+ 5 is smaller than quite a few of the 30 other 5 person tents we have looked at.
  3. Lacking in Headroom. With 11% less headroom than similar sized tents, one can see how this could be a negative thing for some people.
  4. No windows. With no windows it is not easy to keep the tent cool on a hot summers night.
  5. Rainfly does not completely cover the tent. The rainfly only covers the ceiling and part of the tent body from the top. Meaning it may not protect against heavy rain.
  6. Footprint not Included. There is no included footprint, there is one sold separately specifically for the Conifer+ 5 footprint Even though the floor may be made of 68D x 190t Poly PU F/R, it is still better to protect it further with a footprint, especially on rough terrain.
  7. Out of Stock. Unfortunately this particular tent is not currently in stock. It is still on the manufactures site the last time we checked.
  8. Sloping walls. Even though Dome tents have many qualities to be positive about. The sloping sides do tend to make it all the more smaller inside.
