Tent Set Up

Summary: Favorable Reviews

People who bought this tent noted that: they have used this tent in a winter blizzard on Mt. Rainier, driving rain and sleet on Mt. Hood, and autumn rains in the Cascades (and many other places and conditions). It is lightweight, always kept us dry and comfortable. The Shield is extremely easy to set up and bombproof. I could not be more pleased by the comfort, reliability, and ease of set up that this tent provides.

Summary: Unfavorable Reviews

Campers, who used the tent, said that: the Shield is on the small side, and to have your gear in with you, it gets pretty tight. The vestibule adds about half the space of the tent. My only issue was I didn't open the vents enough, so there was condensation in the morning (user error).

SPECS AND CONFIGURATIONS

The Shield 3 has two windows and one door and a maximum center height of 3' 7, which is a tiny bit less than the average height of the 163 other 3 person tents we have examined With 39 square feet of room inside, it is a lot smaller than some other 3-person tents, and it would be quite tight for you and, up to two other campers during the 4-seasons, this tent is recommended for use in, smaller tents similar to this one can make a superb choice for campers who appreciate spending heaps of time outside their tent getting some air.

Some of the great points about dome tents are, that they are generally speaking lightweight, making them easy to carry. In most all cases, tents used for backpacking are of the dome type. They are generally speaking, freestanding and very straightforward to set up. In calm weather, you could do without securing the tent with stakes and ropes, not that this is recommended.

Dome tents are easily the most common of all the other types of tents you will see when camping. They tend to do better in storms than other types, allowing rain to roll off the slanted walls, unlike cabin tents that have flat roofs, resulting in the water pooling on the top of the tent. The most basic dome tent should have a square footprint, sloped walls two or more poles which cross in the middle of the roof. Because of the way they are made, it is usually thought of that they are best for up to a maximum of 6 people.

Underneath you can see a list of the tent's strongest and weakest points.

PROS

  1. Freestanding. The Shield can support its own weight on any terrain. It does not even have to be staked down in most cases. But in case of strong winds, it is always best to secure it to the ground with the included steel stakes and guylines.
  2. Vestibule. Having one vestibule. Affords you a place to store shoes and other items that can get dirty, muddy, this is a huge plus.
  3. Internal storage. It is nice to see Big Agnes has added a gear loft and pockets in the interior to store some of your stuff.
  4. More than one window. With 2 openings it is easier to keep the tent cool on a hot summers night.
  5. Durable, water-resistant floor. The floor material is Nylon, which is a substantially thick and high-strength fabric. Meaning the base is not prone to tears and punctures. Also, the material has a 10000 mm waterproofing rating, which is very good for most circumstances.
  6. Available in other sizes. Big Agnes has also made this model available in Other Sizes.

CONS

  1. Not spacious. With a floor area of 39 square feet, the Shield 3 is smaller than quite a lot of the 168 other 3 person tents we have looked at.
  2. Lacking in Headroom. With 8% less headroom than similar sized tents, one can see how this could be a negative factor for some campers.
  3. Footprint not Included. There is no included footprint, The floor may be made of Nylon but it is still best to protect it further with a footprint, more so on rough terrain.
  4. Out of Stock. Unfortunately this particular tent is not currently in stock. It is still on the manufactures site the last time we checked.
  5. Sloping walls. Even though Dome tents have lots of things to be positive about. The sloping sides do tend to make it all the more smaller inside.

CONCLUSION

Big Agnes's Shield 3 tent is ideal for mountaineering and backpacking. In case you simply happened to arrive on this page while browsing for a brand new tent having never heard of this brand or this tent model previously, it is possibly a good thing to look at a few other similar tents.

Value for money: When thinking about value for your dollar, this tent is a more expensive than the average price of all the one hundred and sixty-three, three-person tents we have looked at, this just by itself is not a negative thing. We also need to think about other areas in-depth, as we do with each tent.

When we determine the score of a single tent, we regard loads of conditions, finding areas where the tent could beat other very similar tents and where it is not quite as good. In this case, with a total rating of 4.5 and the price info above, It is simple enough to notice that with a price point of $799.95 Big Agnes's Shield 3 is an exceptional buy even though it could be thought of as very costly when set side by side with comparable tents.
