Summary: Favorable Reviews

Some campers said: For anyone seeking for a roomy and dependable trekking tent, it is a great option. The pole system is strong and well-designed, and the tent is simple to set up and take down. Even in rainstorms, the rainfly performs a great job of keeping you dry, and the ventilation system of the tent does a great job of preventing condensation within the tent. The internal pockets are a wonderful addition for organizing, and the tent is roomy enough to accommodate three people and their stuff in comfort.

Summary: Unfavorable Reviews

Campers who used it said: Would not recommend this for beginners. Took us a lot of time to set up and even take down. The tent was also not very waterproof and leaked during a heavy rainstorm, making my gear wet. Zippers were fragile. Extra care is needed or you will end up destroying it.

SPECS AND CONFIGURATIONS

The Crag Lake 3 SL has two doors and a maximum center height of 3' 8, which is a little bit less than the average height of the 172 other 3 person tents we have studied. With 38 square feet of space inside, it is significantly smaller than some other 3-person tents, and it would be quite tight for you and, up to two other campers all through the 3-seasons, this tent is recommended for use in, smaller tents similar to this one generally make an ideal choice for people who like spending heaps of time outside their tent getting some air.

A few of the great things about dome tents are, that they are generally speaking light, making them easy to carry around. In most all cases, tents used for backpacking are of the dome type. They are generally speaking, freestanding and very easy to set up. In calm weather, you could do without securing the tent with stakes and ropes, not that this is suggested.

Dome tents are without a doubt the most common of all the other types of tents you will see when camping. They tend to fair better in the rain than other types, allowing rain to easily slide off the slanted walls, unlike cabin tents that have flat tops, resulting in the rain pooling on the roof. The most basic dome tent should have a rectangular footprint, sloped sides a couple of poles which converge in the middle of the roof. Because of their construction, it is usually thought of that they are best for up to a maximum of 6 people.

Down below, you can find an account of the tent's strongest and weakest points.

PROS

  1. Freestanding. The Crag Lake SL can support its own weight on any terrain. It does not need to be staked down in most cases. But in case of strong winds, it is always best to secure it to the ground with the included steel stakes and guylines.
  2. Vestibules. Having two vestibules. Affords you a place to store shoes and other items that can get dirty, muddy, this is a huge plus.
  3. Internal storage. It is good to see Big Agnes has added a gear loft and pockets in the interior to store some of your gear.
  4. More than one door. With 2 doors, it is easier to get in and out of the tent, in the middle of the night if needed.
  5. Breathable. The Crag Lake's interior uses a mesh fabric on the inside of the tent, and this helps maximize the flow of air. With the extra ventilation, and this tent is great for use in the warmer months.
  6. The rainfly completely covers the tent body. The rainfly covers the entire body of the tent from the top to the bottom and has a waterproof rating of 0mm. Meaning it will easily protect you against heavy downpours.
  7. Other sizes are available. Big Agnes has also made this model available in Other Sizes.
  8. Low price. It is a great deal for a 3 person dome tent that provides this much space. Not a lot of tents available on the market give this level of quality for only $399.05

CONS

  1. Not spacious. With a floor area of 38 square feet, the Crag Lake 3 is smaller than quite a few of the 177 other 3 person tents we have looked at.
  2. Lacking in Headroom. With 7% less headroom than similar sized tents, one can see how this could be a negative factor for some campers.
  3. Footprint not Included. There is no included footprint, The floor may be made of Regen robic double-ripstop nylon with PFC-free DWR treatment and waterproof polyurethane coating but it is still best to protect it further with a footprint, especially on rough terrain.
  4. Out of Stock. Unfortunately this particular tent is not currently in stock. It is still on the manufactures website the last time we checked.
  5. Sloping walls. Even though Dome tents have many attributes to be positive about. The sloping walls do tend to make it all the more smaller inside.
