Tent Set Up

It sets up easily and quickly

Green Thumbs Up Logo

Summary: Favorable Reviews

Campers mentioned It stands up to 30-35 mph wind, pouring rain without a single leak. I love the benefit of the light system on the inside. Light, sturdy, sets up, breaks down, and packs quickly and full of great features. I had to set this tent up using mostly moon-light. It was a breeze. One day it dumped buckets of rain, yet the inside stayed warm and dry. Side entry was grand, and the vestibule is roomy, comfortable to access from within the tent, and kept my bags dry during a storm.

Summary: Unfavorable Reviews

Reviews said Zippers are not that tough. I'm 5'9" tall, and the tent is perfect. If I were 6' or taller, I might not be happy in it. If you want the rain fly to be useful, you'll need to be able to stake it out. The only issue I have is the wiring on the light system is messed up, so I have to exchange it for a new one, so be careful with that feature while packing it up.

SPECS AND CONFIGURATIONS

The Rattlesnake 4 SL mtnGLO has two doors and a peak center height of 4' 3, which is 13 inches smaller than the average height of the 134 other 4 person tents we have studied. With 57 square feet of space inside, it is considerably smaller than some other 4-person tents, and it would be quite tight for you and, up to three other campers during the whole of the 3-seasons, this tent is approved for use in, smaller tents similar to this one make a good choice for people who enjoy spending lots of hours outside of the tent enjoying the fresh air.

Many of the fantastic things about dome tents are, that they are generally speaking light, making them easy to carry. In most all cases, tents used for backpacking are of the dome type. They are usually, freestanding and very simple to set up. In good weather, you could do without guy lines and stakes, not that this is suggested.

Dome tents are without a doubt the most common of all the different types of tents you will see when camping. They tend to do better in storms than other types, allowing rain to easily slide off the slanted walls, unlike cabin tents that have flat tops, resulting in the rain pooling on the roof. The simplest dome tent should have a rectangular footprint, slanted sides two or more poles which converge in the center of the roof. Because of their construction, it is typically thought of that they are best for up to a maximum of 6 people.

Beneath you can browse an account of the tent's pros and cons.

PROS

  1. Freestanding. The Rattlesnake SL mtnGLO can support its own weight on any terrain. It does not even have to be staked down in most cases. But in case of strong winds, it is always best to secure it to the floor with the included steel stakes and guylines.
  2. Vestibules. Having two vestibules. Affords you somewhere to store shoes and other things that can get dirty, muddy, this is a big plus.
  3. Internal storage. It is nice to see Big Agnes has added a gear loft and pockets in the interior to store some of your stuff.
  4. More than one door. With 2 doors, it is easier to get in and out of the tent, in the middle of the night if needed.
  5. The rainfly completely covers the tent body. The rainfly covers the whole body of the tent from the top to the bottom and has a waterproof rating of 0mm. Meaning it will easily protect you against heavy downpours.
  6. Other sizes are available. Big Agnes has also made this model available in Other Sizes.

CONS

  1. Not roomy. With a floor area of 57 square feet, the Rattlesnake 4 is smaller than quite a few of the 134 other 4 person tents we have looked at.
  2. Lacking in Headroom. With 13% less headroom than similar sized tents, one can see how this could be a negative factor for some campers.
  3. No windows. With no windows it is not easy to keep the tent cool on a hot summers night.
  4. Footprint not Included. There is no included footprint, The floor may be made of Ripstop nylon but it is still best to protect it further with a footprint, especially on rough terrain.
  5. Discontinued: Unfortunately this particular tent has been discontinued on the manufactures website and is no longer available elsewhere, that we are aware of.
  6. A tad heavy for backpacking. Even though the Rattlesnake 4, looks like a small tent, it is not ideal for backpacking as it weighs 7 pounds. This is quite a lot more than many other backpacking tents
  7. Sloping walls. Even though Dome tents have lots of things to be positive about. The sloping sides do tend to make it all the more smaller inside.

CONCLUSION

4.3 Stars Logo

Our Ratings: 4.3 STARS

Big Agnes's Rattlesnake 4 SL mtnGLO tent is suitable for bicycle & motorbike camping. Here are a couple of other nice points not noted above which, were noticed and liked, while reviewing the model: Winner of Backpacker magazine's 2015 Editors' Choice Award for its built-in LED lighting, The vestibule on both sides is handy for storing a few items and Reflective guylines and webbing on tent corners.

With great ratings, and headroom of 4' and 57 square feet of area to sleep, this tent is like your own modest home away from home. It enables you together with 2 other friends to spend some real quality time camping together. We found a decent amount of positive points about the tent that you can look at above.

If you came to this website looking for suggestions on this actual tent, our view is, it will make for a good buy. If you simply happened to land on this page while looking for a new tent having not heard of this brand or this tent previously, it is probably a good idea to look at a few more similar tents.

Value for money: When thinking about value for money, this tent is more costly than the normal cost of all the one hundred and fifty-four, four-person tents we have studied, all alone this is not a negative thing. We also need to look at other areas in detail, as we do for each tent.

When we calculate the overall score of a single tent, we reflect upon a lot of stuff, looking for areas where the tent could outshine other comparable tents and where it is lacking. On this occasion, with an overall rating of 4.3 and the price knowledge above, It is simple to recognize that with a price of $499.95 Big Agnes's Rattlesnake 4 SL mtnGLO is a fair purchase even though it could be thought of as quite expensive when set side by side with similar tents.

The ratings show that the quality and space the tent gives you make it a fair buy for those wanting a tent that will last for lots of years. It should make an ok choice for most campers searching for an adequate three-season dome tent to go camping in, that will serve you well for years to come.
