Summary: Favorable Reviews

Campers mentioned: The tent was just what they expected it to be. It is super cozy, and the space inside is just enough for the suggested number of people. It is an excellent tent for car camping with ingenious interior window shades. We loved the big windows, tall headroom & the easy set-up. Ideal for summer camping. Quality is excellent, the fabric is sturdy, and the poles are lightweight and durable. Very easy to set up.

Summary: Unfavorable Reviews

Campers noted: That the mesh fabric on the sides does not give a lot of privacy. Once it gets cold, you can feel it inside. Many campers have mentioned the fact that rain will get inside the tent, this is probably because of the fly not covering the sides.

SPECS AND CONFIGURATIONS

The Colfax 3 has three windows and two doors and a peak center height of 4' 1, which is a tiny bit less than the average height of the 139 other 3 person tents we have examined With 44 square feet of space inside, it is a little bit smaller than some other 3-person tents, and it could be a little tight for you and, up to two other campers all through the 3-seasons, this tent is recommended for use in, smaller tents like this one are an awesome choice for people who love spending plenty of hours outside exploring the great outdoors.

Many of the fantastic points about dome tents are, that they are generally speaking not too heavy, making them simple to carry around. In most all cases, tents used for backpacking are of the dome type. They are generally speaking, freestanding and very simple to set up. In calm weather, you can do without securing the tent with stakes and ropes, not that this is suggested.

Dome tents are the most commonly seen of all the different sorts of tents you will see when camping. They tend to fair better in bad weather than other types, allowing water to easily slide off the sloped sides, unlike cabin tents that have flat tops, allowing the water to pool on the top of the tent. The simplest dome tent will have a rectangular footprint, sloped sides two or more poles which cross in the center of the roof. Because of their construction, it is generally considered that they are ideal for up to a maximum of 6 people.

Below you can see an account of the tent's pros and cons.

PROS

  1. Freestanding. The Colfax can support its own weight on any terrain. It does not even have to be staked down in most cases. But in case of strong winds, it is always best to secure it to the ground with the included steel stakes and guylines.
  2. Vestibule. Having one vestibule. Gives you somewhere to store shoes and other things that can get dirty, muddy, this is a big plus.
  3. Internal storage. It is nice to see Marmot has added a gear loft and pockets in the interior to store some of your gear.
  4. More than one door. With 2 doors, it is easier to get in and out of the tent, in the middle of the night if needed.
  5. More than one window. With 3 windows it is easier to keep the tent cool on a hot summers night.
  6. Durable, water-resistant floor. The floor material is 68D 190T poly taffeta, which is a substantially thick and high-strength fabric. Meaning the base is not prone to rips and punctures. Also, the material has a 2000 mm waterproofing rating, which is very good for most circumstances.
  7. Includes FootPrint. It is not often we see a footprint included with the tent. It is strongly suggested to always use a footprint, so not having to pay extra for one is a bonus.
  8. Available in other sizes. Marmot has also made this model available in Other Sizes.
  9. Low price. It is a great buy for a 3 person dome tent that provides this much space. Not a lot of tents available on the market give this level of quality for only $299.00

CONS

  1. Not roomy. With a floor area of 44 square feet, the Colfax 3 is smaller than quite a lot of the 139 other 3 person tents we have looked at.
  2. Lacking in Headroom. With 5% less headroom than similar sized tents, one can see how this could be a negative factor for some people.
  3. Rainfly does not wholly cover the tent body. The rainfly only covers the ceiling and part of the tent body from the top. Meaning it might not protect against heavy downpours.
  4. A tad heavy for backpacking. Even though the Colfax 3, looks like a small tent, it is not probably the best choice for backpacking as it weighs 6 pounds. This is quite a lot more than many other backpacking tents
  5. Sloping walls. Even though Dome tents have heaps of qualities to be positive about. The sloping walls do tend to make it all the more smaller inside.

CONCLUSION

4.3 Stars Logo

Our Ratings: 4.3 STARS

Marmot's Colfax 3 tent is perfect for backpacking. Here are a few other things not already mentioned above which, we found and liked, while researching the model: Multi-Use Shelter Converts from Tent to Sun Shade, Seam Taped Catenary Cut Floor and Lamp Shade Pocket Securely Holds Your Headlamp to Provide Ambient Light.

With great ratings, and headroom of 4' and 44 square feet of space to enjoy, this tent is like your very own modest apartment. It will allow you to enjoy some really enjoyable time exploring the great outdoors. We found a decent amount of positive points about the tent that you can look at above.

If you found this page looking for suggestions about this specific tent, we think, it should make for a great acquisition. If you simply happened to arrive on this website while looking for a brand new tent having never heard of this manufacurer or this tent model previously, it is probably a good thing to look at some other similar tents also.

Value for money: When thinking about value for money, this tent is a lot more competitive than the normal price of all the one hundred and ninety-three, three-person tents we have looked at, this itself does not make it good value for money. One should also look at other things in detail, as we do with every tent.

When we measure the overall score of a single tent, we reflect upon plenty of conditions, searching for points where the tent could exceed other very similar tents and where it is lacking. On this occasion, with a total rating of 4.3 and the price conclusions above, we can spot that with a price of $299.00 Marmot's Colfax 3 is a great purchase and astonishingly priced in comparison with similar tents.

Its overall score shows that the build and dimensions the tent provides were not skimped on to get a price tag undoubtedly below the usual price for similar tents. It is also worth noting it is marked down by 0% from the manufactures suggested retail price. It will make an awesome choice for nearly all campers looking for a comfy three-season dome tent to go camping in, that will serve you well for years to come.
