Summary: Unfavorable Reviews

Campers who bought the tent said that: Some of the poles are very flimsy. Mesh at the top was thin and seems easy to rip. Also suffers from leaking.

SPECS AND CONFIGURATIONS

The Evanston 8 Elite has one window and one door and a maximum center height of 6' 4, which is a tiny bit smaller than the average height of the 62 different 8 person tents we have studied. With 144 square feet of space inside, it is a little bit larger than some other 8-person tents, and it should accommodate you and, up to seven other campers during the whole of the 3-seasons, this tent is recommended for use in, larger tents like this one can generally make a suitable choice for groups who prefer having lots of room inside the tent for sleeping and hanging out.

Some of the great points about dome tents are, that they are generally speaking not too heavy, making them simple to carry. In nearly all instances, tents used for backpacking are of the dome type. They are generally speaking, freestanding and very straightforward to set up. In good weather, you could do without guy lines and stakes, not that this is suggested.

Dome tents are without a doubt the most common of all the various types of tents you will find when camping. They tend to do better in the rain than other types, allowing rain to roll off the sloped walls, unlike cabin tents that have flat roofs, allowing the rain to pool on the top of the tent. The most basic dome tent will have a square floor, sloped sides two or more poles which converge in the center of the roof. Because of the way they are made, it is typically thought of that they are best suited for up to a maximum of 6 people.

PROS

  1. Freestanding. The Evanston Elite can support its own weight on any terrain. It does not need to be staked down in most cases. But in case of strong winds, it is always best to secure it to the ground with the included steel stakes and guylines.
  2. Plenty of space. With a center height of 76 inches (more than 6 feet) and a floor area of 144 square feet, the Evanston gives you a lot of space. Most people can stand inside the tent without ducking their heads.
  3. Internal storage. It is good to see Coleman has added a gear loft and pockets in the interior to store some of your things.
  4. Has awnings. The awnings shelter the walls of the tent.
  5. Other sizes are available. Coleman has also made this model available in Other Sizes.
  6. Low price. It is a great purchase for a 8 person dome tent providing this much room. Not many tents available on the market provide this level of quality for only $229.99

CONS

  1. Vulnerable to wind. Because of its size and shape, the Evanston may not do best in strong winds if it is not firmly secured with the provided guy lines and stakes. Even though the tent is listed as freestanding in all but very calm conditions, one would want to stake and tie it down correctly.
  2. Lacking in Headroom. With 7% less headroom than similar sized tents, one can see how this could be a negative factor for some people.
  3. Only one room. The Evanston is recommended for 8 campers, some other tents of a similar size have more than one room allowing for a little more privacy.
  4. No Vestibules. If you want to keep your dirty shoes, clothes, and backpacks protected from the rain etc, you must keep them inside the tent.
  5. Rainfly does not wholly cover the tent. The rainfly only covers the ceiling and part of the tent body from the top. Meaning it might not protect against heavy rain.
  6. Fiberglass poles. Poles made of fiberglass help to keep the price down, they do though tend to be not as strong. This is yet another reason to only use the Evanston in decent weather.
  7. Footprint not Included. There is no included footprint, The floor may be made of Polyethylene 1000D but it is still best to protect it further with a footprint, more so on rough terrain.
  8. Discontinued: Unfortunately this particular tent has been discontinued on the manufactures website and is not available elsewhere, that we know of.
  9. Sloping walls. Even though Dome tents have heaps of things to be positive about. The sloping walls do tend to make it all the more smaller inside.

CONCLUSION

3.8 Stars Logo

Our Ratings: 3.8 STARS

Coleman's Evanston 8 Elite tent is good for car camping. There are a few other cool things not noted above which, were found and liked, while reviewing the model: Before you lie down, attach the fly for protection from the rain, or on dry nights, gaze at the stars through the mesh roof., 100-lumen LED tent light, powered by four D-cell batteries or one Coleman CPX 6 Rechargeable Battery Cartridge and WeatherTec System— patented welded floors and inverted seams keep water out.

With acceptable ratings, a decent amount of reviews and a peak height of 6' and 144 square feet of space to enjoy, this tent is like your very own modest home away from home. This allows you together with 7 other friends to spend some delightful time camping together. We found a decent amount of pros about the tent that you can look at above.

If you found this page looking for an endorsement about this particular tent, our view is, it would make for an ok acquisition. If you just happened to arrive on this page while looking for a new tent having not heard of this brand or this tent previously, it is probably a good thing to look at some more comparable tents also.

Value for money: In terms of value for your money, this tent is unquestionably cheaper than the standard price of all the sixty-two, eight-person tents we have taken a look at, this alone by itself does not make it excellent value for money. One should also take a look at other things in-depth, as we do for every tent.

When we calculate the valuation of a single tent, we regard plenty of data points, finding things where the tent could outperform other very similar tents and where it is lacking. On this occasion, with an overall rating of 3.8 and the price conclusions above, we can recognize that with a price point of $229.99 Coleman's Evanston 8 Elite is a fair deal and very competitively priced when compared with similar tents.

The overall score shows that the quality and capacity the tent gives you might have been slightly compromised to obtain a price tag undoubtedly under the usual price for comparable tents. It should make an ok choice for most people searching for an adequate three-season dome tent to go camping with, that should serve you well.
