Tent Set Up

Pretty easy to setup, but with all the poles it might be a bit confusing for the first time or 2.

Summary: Favorable Reviews

Campers who purchased the tent said: They couldn't ask for a better tent. It sets up in just a few minutes and has a fair amount of ceiling height along with an easy to use rain fly. The tent is spacious for two people, which is excellent when considering all the extra gear needed in the winter. Set up was a breeze, along with the break down both were a breeze. Withstands high winds, excellent ventilation, plenty of pockets to stash small gear in, and an excellent sized vestibule.

Summary: Unfavorable Reviews

People who bought the tent reported: It is quite heavy. The ventilation is not the best when the fly is fully closed. It can get hot in the sun, so do not forget to open the vent on top of the fly! A little complicated to set up in -20C temperatures with snowshoes on but worth the effort. Heavy in an already heavy winter backpack.

SPECS AND CONFIGURATIONS

The Thor 3 has two doors and a peak center height of 3' 9, which is a tiny bit less than the average height of the 139 various 3 person tents we have examined With 47 square feet of room inside, it is a little bit smaller than some other 3-person tents, and it could be a little cramped for you and, up to two other campers during the 4-seasons, this tent is approved for use in, smaller tents similar to this one often can make a really nice choice for people that appreciate spending lots of hours outside of their tent exploring.

A few of the great things about dome tents are, that they are generally speaking not too heavy, making them simple to carry around. In most all cases, tents used for backpacking are of the dome type. They are generally speaking, freestanding and very straightforward to set up. In good weather, you can do without guy lines and stakes, not that this is recommended.

Dome tents are the most common of all the other types of tents you will see when camping. They tend to do better in bad weather than other types, allowing water to easily slide off the sloped sides, unlike cabin tents that have flat roofs, resulting in the rain pooling on the top of the tent. The most basic dome tent should have a rectangular floor, slanted walls a couple of poles which converge in the middle of the roof. Due to the way they are made, it is typically considered that they are best for up to a maximum of 6 campers.

Underneath you can browse an account of the tent's strongest and weakest points.

PROS

  1. Freestanding. The Thor can support its own weight on any terrain. It does not even have to be staked down in most cases. But in case of strong winds, it is always best to secure it to the ground with the included steel stakes and guylines.
  2. Vestibules. Having two vestibules. Gives you a place to store shoes and other things that can get dirty, muddy, this is a big plus.
  3. Internal storage. It is good to see Marmot has added a gear loft and pockets in the interior to store some of your things.
  4. More than one door. With 2 doors, it is easier to get in and out of the tent, in the middle of the night if needed.
  5. Durable, water-resistant floor. The floor material is 70d 100% Nylon W/R F/R, which is a substantially thick and high-strength fabric. Meaning the base is not prone to tears and punctures. Also, the material has a 10000 mm waterproofing rating, which is very good for most circumstances.
  6. Available in other sizes. Marmot has also made this model available in Other Sizes.

CONS

  1. Not spacious. With a floor area of 47 square feet, the Thor 3 is smaller than quite a few of the 139 other 3 person tents we have looked at.
  2. Lacking in Headroom. With 9% less headroom than similar sized tents, one can see how this could be a negative factor for some campers.
  3. Footprint not Included. There is no included footprint, The floor may be made of 70d 100% Nylon W/R F/R but it is still best to protect it further with a footprint, especially on rough terrain.
  4. A little heavy for backpacking. Even though the Thor 3, looks like a small tent, it is not ideal for backpacking as it weighs 11 pounds. This is quite a lot more than many other backpacking tents
  5. Sloping walls. Even though Dome tents have lots of qualities to rave about. The sloping sides do tend to make it all the more smaller inside.
